The Linnaean Society of New York field trips provide opportunities for members and their guests to observe birds, and other fauna and flora, with the help of knowledgeable leaders. Nonmembers are welcome and will be accommodated if space allows. Participants at all skill levels can benefit from these trips.
To participate in a trip, contact the registrar listed for that trip by email or telephone between the hours of 9:00 am and 9:00 pm starting on the day that registration opens. Please provide the registrar with the following information:
- Your name, and the name of anyone else you may be registering
- Whether or not those registering are Linnaean members
- Your telephone number(s) and email address
- Whether you have a car or need a ride
- How many passengers you can take in your car
- An approximate location of where you live (such as “West 86th Street and Broadway”), to aid in arranging carpools.
The registrar can provide information about the trip, such as starting time and place, different sites that may be visited, and what to bring. Usual items to bring include binoculars, birding scopes for certain trips (if you have one, or if not, other participants may allow you to look through theirs), field guide(s) (book or app), rain gear, extra warm clothing for cold weather, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, boots for muddy or wet trips, lunch, and sufficient water and fluids. Dress comfortably and be prepared for walking and extended periods outside. Please note that ending times for trips cannot be given in advance, due to factors such as amount of bird activity, pace of group, change in leader’s plans, and traffic conditions. If you need to leave a trip by a certain time, please let the registrar know in advance, although it may not be possible to accommodate such. And if you need to cancel for any reason, please let the registrar know as soon as possible.
Final carpool arrangements are usually not made until 2–3 days before the trip. At that time the registrar will inform you of your driver’s name and contact information if you are a passenger, or the names of passengers if you are a driver. Passengers should contact the driver to confirm exact meeting time and place for the ride. Passengers share expenses and should pay the ride fee to the driver at the beginning of the trip. Registrars may use discretion in arranging carpools, and usually do so more by location and convenience of the drivers and passengers than by who registered first.
Trips are usually limited to 12–18 participants, so please register early in the registration period to avoid disappointment. Drivers who are willing to take other participants will have preference over anyone else. There is a constant problem with having enough cars for these trips; some trips are canceled because of this. If you have a car and can offer rides for people you will be providing a great service to the program. Rental cars can be expensive, but remain an option.
For many local trips, such as Central Park, Prospect Park, and Jamaica Bay where public transportation is used and the meeting time and place are designated, there is no need to register. The leader’s phone number is provided only in case you need information such as directions or to find out if the trip is being canceled due to weather.
