Gateway General Management Plan, May 2014 — Summary of Changes

This comprehensive and interpretive report (PDF), which summarizes the changes made to the original General Management Plan for Gateway National Recreation Area, was prepared by Darren Klein of New York City Audubon for the Birders’ Coalition for Gateway. In short, the "new" GMP reflects all of the zoning changes asked for by the coalition. Additionally, as the coalition requested, there will be no access to the islands in Jamaica Bay. The original GMP proposed day visits to and even camping on the islands. The coalition had also asked that wildlife be named a fundamental resource; this request was not included. Insofar as enforcement is a significant concern, the coalition emphasized the need to hire additional park rangers for the Jamaica Bay unit; nothing in the final GMP addresses this key issue.
