Beginners Birding Walk in Central Park’s North End

Date: Sunday, September 22, 2024

Leader: Linda LaBella
Transportation: Public Transportation – Participants can use public transportation to arrive at the meeting location.
Meeting Point: After your registration is confirmed, the Registrar will share directions, the exact meeting place, and time with attendees.
Schedule: Short walk in the park.
Relative Difficulty: Easy, about 1/4 mile with mostly paved paths, but does include some uneven grassy areas with minor inclines and short dirt paths.

Trip Description: Central Park is one of the world’s premier birding spots, especially during spring and fall migrations, and we encourage first-time and beginner birders to join us on a fun, informative and casual field trip where you will learn the basics of birding: using binoculars, field guides, species ID, and birding etiquette. You will be introduced to simple identifying tools like field marks, bird behavior and birdsong. On a good day we’ll see migrating songbirds like warblers, sparrows, vireos, and waterfowl.

The walk begins in the North End of Central Park at the Pool on the westside, one of the best birding habitats in the park, then typically proceeds along a stream called the Ravine with boardwalks and paved pathways. Appropriate shoes for walking on grass and dirt paths are strongly recommended. Remember to bring a pair of binoculars and all of your birding questions. Rain Date: September 29th

Please read The Linnaean Society of New York COVID-19 Field Trip Guidelines before registering.

Registration: Registration opens at 9 am on Monday, September 9. After that time, click here to register. Registration closes at 6 pm on Wednesday, September 18. Members (and those who have applied for membership) will be prioritized over non-members.

Please read the About Our Trips page, if you’re going on a field trip for the first time. It details our field trip policies, recommends what to bring on a trip, and offers other useful information, pro tips, and tricks.
