Chris Wood is the project manager for eBird. He also leads trips in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Central America for the bird tour company WINGS. He writes: “eBird, the real-time on-line checklist program launched in 2002 by the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society, provides rich data sources on bird abundance and distribution. Its goal is to maximize the utility and accessibility of the vast number of bird observations (now more than three million per month) made by recreational and professional bird watchers and to ensure these data are available to researchers and conservationists around the globe. I will highlight the growth of eBird and explore some of its research and conservation uses, including the role that eBird analysis is playing in land management in the U.S. and elsewhere in the world.”
