River Watch at Dyckman Fields in Inwood Hill Park
Date: Tuesday, September 17, 2024
Leader: Andrew Farnsworth
Public Transportation: Participants can use public transportation to arrive at the meeting location.
Meeting Point: After confirming your registration, the Registrar will provide directions, the meeting location, and the exact start time.
Schedule: The birding will last at least two hours, weather and birds permitting, with easy options to leave earlier as desired. If the birding is good, possible extension for an additional hour.
Relative difficulty: Walking will be on wide, crushed-stone carriage paths with some gradual uphill segments, with frequent stops to look and listen for birds. Prepare to spend a lot of time looking up at the sky.
Trip Description: This river watch will focus on migrating raptors, waterfowl, passerines, gulls, and terns from the unique vantage point of Dyckman Fields, Inwood Hill Park, at the tip of New York County. Participants will search the skies while remaining mostly in one stationary location. Scopes recommended, but not essential.
If winds are unfavorable on the day of the trip, our leader may change the location to Randall’s Island to search for Fall migrants. Scopes or a high-zoom camera are strongly recommended.
Andrew Farnsworth, the Visiting Scientist at the Center for Avian Population Studies at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, will lead this trip. His expertise and guidance will ensure a rewarding birdwatching experience.
