The Linnaean Society of New York

Doodletown Road

Date: Saturday, May 10, 2025

Leader: Richard ZainEldeen
Transportation: Carpool Trip – Drivers willing to provide rides are encouraged to attend. The Registrar will work with participants without a vehicle to organize rides and share the suggested carpool fee for the driver. This usually works out, but we can not guarantee a ride unless there are enough enough volunteer drivers.
Meeting Point: After your registration is confirmed, the Registrar will share directions, the exact meeting place, and time with attendees.
Schedule: The walk usually ends shortly after lunch.
Relative Difficulty: The terrain is mainly uphill in the beginning, with a short, steep incline that then gradually flattens. Be prepared to walk at least three miles.

Trip Description: Now part of Bear Mountain State Park, Doodletown began as an isolated Rockland County, New York community. Full of colonial history, with the foundations of houses and schools still present, it is a renowned location for viewing warblers. Cerulean Warblers and Hooded Warblers are abundant, and other warblers such as Black-throated Green, Black-throated Blue, Chestnut-sided, Palm, Prairie, Yellow-rumped, Yellow, Black-and-White, Canada, American Redstart, Blue-winged, Common Yellowthroat, Louisiana Waterthrush, and Ovenbird are commonly seen. Yellow-throated Vireos, Scarlet Tanagers, and Indigo Buntings all breed here. Less common migrants are always possible; participants can expect between fifty and seventy species.

Please read The Linnaean Society of New York COVID-19 Field Trip Guidelines before registering.

Registration: Registration opens at 9 am on Monday, April 28. After that time, click here to register. Registration closes at 6 pm on Wednesday, May 7. Members (and those who have applied for membership) will be prioritized over non-members.
